Eyes Wide Shut
Director: Stanley Kubrick
Starring: Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman
Genre: Thriller / Drama. Rated: R
This was a film you may not have seen, or possibly not liked when you saw it. Why? Because it strikes a disturbing note: sex, psychology, and spirituality. It reveals the seedy underbelly of the human psyche for one thing, and strikes at the heart of our core insecurities. Yet, it is exquisitely scripted, brilliantly acted, and has a very profound lesson to teach us all.
Look for the scene - fairly early - in which Tom says "I'm certain of you". This is the revelation of his entire egoically based relationship, and her truth - boxed up for a year, tormenting her - ignites him on a journey of self discovery, but only after it compels him into the bizarre.
Kubrick shows us so much about this character (one uncomfortably familiar to most of us!) in simple shots showing Tom 'frozen', staring... where? into his own unbearable loss of egoic certainty.
Once again, the goddess and her truth set the god first spinning, into self discovery, and then reels him back in benevolently at the end!
The entire setting of the ritualized sex in which all present must wear masks. Expertly filmed by Kubrick, it reveals their characters (and most human beings) never really 'make love'. They never really connect in intimacy because the mask of persona, hidden agendas, and secrets, keep us apart. This is really a story of taking off the mask through truth and inner honesty, shared in the intimate field of relationship, and how the choice for love carries a couple to the unmasking of inner secrets and shames, bringing them together in a new wholeness.
Nicoles stunning line just at the end reveals one of Jeshua's precious teachings: "Healing is the affect of joining." Will you notice it when she says it?
Truly, Eyes Wide Shut is a masterpiece if you are willing to dwell on its inner message, and can appreciate impeccable, skillful acting in timing and nuance, brilliant scripting, and masterful directing.
The End of the Affair
Director: Neil Jordan
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Julianne Moore
Genre: Drama / Romance / War
Rated: R
If you havent seen this masterpiece, you have missed a truly spiritual film scripted and filmed in a unique way.
Ralph Fiennes (oscar winner, The English Patient), knows how to pick scripts. He and Julienne Moore are in an affair in World War II, London. The story unfolds exquisitely with typical english understatement, but leads to a sudden, unexpected event that shifts it all to a truly spiritual story of spiritual death and rebirth, and an opportunity for all three involved to choose love... but will they all make that choice? What choice would you make?
The film opens with Finnes typing with voiceover and reveals what the story is about: the struggle to work out ones relationship to God, that ultimately requires a giving up of oneself.
Their characters reveal the inner struggle of us all, right to the end. Sometimes a new pathway opens. To take it, or not? The decision is everything, sometimes the difference between heaven, and hell!
I've seen this film 10 times!
Always
Director: Steven Spielburg
Starring: Holly Hunter, Richard Dreyfuss
Genre: Fantasy / Romance / Drama Rated: PG
An oldie but a goodie! Sometimes it takes death to learn of life, and awaken to the truth of love.
Dreyfuss, a daredevil firefighter pilot, dies. He meets a wondrous teacher on the other side, who delivers one short precious line that is a jewel of spiritual Truth. You will remember it when you hear it, and, as it did for me, sunk in so deeply it became a beacon to follow... time and again.
Lessons are abound in this delightful, heartwarming, entertaining film.
Life is a storyline that takes us all on a journey..as far into God as we dare! Movies are a nice way to live a lifetime, and grow...all while eating popcorn! Enjoy your leisure time by enjoying movies that just may change you...forever!
